About Last Night....

It was not bad at all last night. Only one resident was up all night setting on her wheelchair and wheeling herself all over the places while calling the names of her family members and I bet she was calling her daughters ' name. She was very agitated and don't listen to us. So we just let her do what she wants to do until she tires herself out but we kept on eye of her to make sure she didn't get into any trouble or disturb any resident because she likes to go in everyones room. And tonight , I hope she will be behaving herself and be in bed by now cause I knew she was up for 2 nights already and she must be tired by then....

Well..I have a lot to say but I don't have enough time here. I have only few minutes left before leaving for work so..see you tomorrow.....

Back to Work

After two days off besides the weekend, I'll be back to work again tonight. It's nice to have some days off sometimes when you want something to do outdoors or going out besides staying at home or always at work. Our body needs to relax also. I am glad to be back to see my favorite resident again. She is like a grandma to me. She is alert and oriented but there are days that she's confused . She calls me "little girl" instead of my name. When I used to work on 2nd shift I always see her. But since I work 3rd shift I seldom see her up at night because she was on bed already by the time I get there. The only time I can see her is when I am assign to take care of her. One night, I went to her room to check her and she was awake that time and she was surprised to see me. She said, "where have you been?" I haven't seen you for long time. And I told her , "I work at night already and every time I am here you are in bed sleeping, so you could not see me, but I can see you." She just smile to me.

You know, it's really nice to work with elderly people. Even they are not related to me. I felt, I accomplised something in my life. Everytime they say "thank you" that feel so good. Especially when it comes to family members like, "Thank you for taking care of my mom" or " Thank you for taking care of my Grandma, and "Thanks for being so nice to her" Those praises makes you a better person.

"My Revelation" on PPP

I don't have anything to say about ppp here until I will get an approval. And yes I submitted this blog "My Revelation" to ppp the other day. But I haven't heard any news from them yet. I would not expect any approval from them. I just tried this blog since I think it would qualify on some of their requirements. Since, I don't have that many paid post here and this blog was not really intended for sponsored post. This blog is actually all about my day to day life, while working with elderly people. But I need some extra income too, so I will accept paid reviews here . And to add some spice on this blog.

Great Weekend

The past weekend was pretty enjoyable. Saturday we went to the mall with my cousin and her family. Yes we did shop. And yesterday we went to Lake Michigan on which part of the lake were frozen already. We did not stay long because it was too cold and I did not wear the proper clothing. Afterwards we had dinner at the Chinese restaurant, then we went to the the mall nearby the restaurants. This was the different mall that we went to yesterday. I did not buy anything on that mall cause we haven't had a chance to go to JCPenny because it was almost 5 in the afternoon already and we need some sleep cause me and Rick had work that night. I like going out as a group because it is fun.
I have some pictures here that I would like to share from our weekend shots...

Weekend Off

Yes, I am happy here because I have the weekend off. And later today we will be going to the mall with my cousin (chalyza). And if we have time we might be going to see some nice sceneries here in Holland. The best thing is, it was not snowing today. And yes it still cold but you can see the blue sky so it is not that bad to go out. We are planning on going to the Asian store too before we will going to the mall. We will have some nice filipino food there since today is Saturday and they will have buffet of all filipino foods. I just want to eat their adobo and pinakbet.

Crazy Night

On the nature of my job. Some say, that the night shift is easier than 1st and 2nd shift, it is because mostly(not all of them) are in bed already and they will only call if they need us. And yes I will only agree that part of it is correct. Because every nights are different, depending what problem may arise. There are nights that are too quite and there are nights like last night, a total chaos.
Actually,we're doing good from the start of our shift.. We were done our last round about 6am, but all of the sudden, residents want to get up and get out of bed and walk by themselves(mostly they are on bed alarms and are not able to walk independently). So we were trying to calm them down and put them back on bed. Trying to explain to them that , it was too early and breakfast would not be until 7am. And the 1st shift people will take care of their breakfast needs not us. Yes they listened sometimes, but few minutes after, the alarms goes off and we know that they are getting out of bed. Good thing that 1st shift are coming and they can take over from us because we are tired and ready to go home to jump in bed.

Residents Rights and Pain Control

As I said on my previous posts on my other blogs and here that today was our In-Service training. By the time I got to my work it was past 2o'clock in the afternoon already. And yes I was a little bit late. Chairs are all occupied , but thanks to my friend she reserved one for me.
Anyway, during the whole training, we were talking mainly about the Residents Rights and Pain Control. The lecturer explained one by one on how to avoid pains.
One of their rights is, that a resident is entitled to adequate and appropriate pain and symptoms management as a basic and essential element of his or her medical treatment. After the discussion, we answered few questions related to "pain."

How do you know when a resident has pain?

Not all of them can be able to communicate and be able to tell you/us that they are in pain , so the best thing to tell is to look at their facial expression. Elderly people or people with dementia be at a higher risk for pain because they can't tell you. So it is everyones responsibility to assess pain.

Image below was from Sydney Animated Facial Expression(SAFE), Sydney Australia. I am not sure if the different facial expresions would show up below, if not, you can see it in here.

Date Mixed up!

I thought today was the 21st and was thinking of going for our in-service training tomorrow which is the 22nd of Feb. But good thing, I talked to my supervisor to double check the schedule , and yes it's on the 22nd but not tomorrow and it will not until Friday. And yes I am glad, cause I have that day off and I would able to attend the training for couple hours. There are some that don't like to attend especially if it falls on their days off because they don't want to drive all the way through the work from their house. But they don't have choice since the in-service training is a mandatory training that the State required us to do so. Otherwise, we would lose our eligibility to work in any skilled facility.

Time to Update here.....

I think it is time to update here...Just noticed that it has been 2days since my last post here. I was trying on keeping all my blogs updated everyday but I could not do it, as I want to. I just don't have enough time to write and think what I'm gonna say. I was trying to do more bloghopping today when I got up but I was writing on my other blog's entry so I only able to visit about 10 blogs today , and only few pay me back. I wish bloggers would also visit back whoever visited them. Because, for me, even I am tired and have a lot to do, I still have time to leave a message for those who visited me. Just for fairness.....

Well, I think that's all of it..
Just a little update here to let my visitor know that this blog still alive .
I have to fix myself and get ready for work in half hour.
And looking forward here for my day off which is the next night...wheww...

Care of Residents with Parkinson's Disease

Every month, we have our in-service training and for this month of February our training will be the 19th & 21st and the topic will be about "pain".

But before that, we were talking about Parkinson's Disease, and on how to care residents with Parkinson's disease.
To give you an overview, Parkinson's disease results from the lack of a chemical in the brain called dopamine, pronounce as doh-pa-mean. Dopamine enables messages to be transmitted along the nerve pathways in the brain. Without dopamine, the areas of the brain responsible for posture and voluntary muscle movement do not function properly.

I have cared for resident with Parkinson's disease. I am aware that this disease of the nervous system causes shaking. So it is not unusual for "us" to see resident that has parkinson's are shaking but not all the time, it si because their body movements becomes slow and their body becomes stiff. And not all Parkinson's resident has dimentia. I have seen so many that are mentally alert.

Causes and care of Parkinson's disease...to be continued....

What Most People Should Be Worried About

When analyzed by numbers of deaths in the United States, these are the most important diseases:

*Heart disease

*Cancer

*Stroke

*Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)

*Accidents(including motor vehicle accidents)

*pneumonia and influenza

*diabetes

*suicide

*kidney disease

*chronic liver disease and cirrhosis

For many, worrying is not something one chooses to do; it just comes naturally. But worrying can be a positive thing. After all, it might actually be helpful if it gets us to change our behavior or in some other way helps us to reduce risk of illness, injury or premature death.

With so many options, we might as well focus on the most important health risks we face, especially those we can change. All that other worry about exceedingly rare diseases or events (especially those we cannot change) can make life less pleasant or even cause crippling anxiety. If you can channel that worry into constructive action, it may be much easier to accept the risks you face, and it may even lead to an improvement in your health.

What is GPS?

Some of us are not familiar what GPS is . GPS means Global Positioning System, it is a satellite-based navigation system and was develop by the United States Defense as a reliable means of accurate navigation. It was originally intended for military applications, but around early 80's the government decided to made the system available for civilian use.

And now there is GPS Insight vehicle tracking syste which is available for trucking companies, e.g roofing, plumbing, construction, sales forces, delivery vehicles, long haul tracking, etc . It is a hardware and web software-based vehicle tracking product. 2008 is The Year of HIPPA

HIPPA stands for , Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act which was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996.
And, in relation to our job, as a healthcare employees, HIPAA restricts us on the use of certain private medical information of residents. Not only that, we are not allowed to use recording devices, video cameras, camera telephones(to take pictures) and cameras at any time while we are on the "facility's" property without any permission of all parties involved. This is not only to protect the privacy of the residents, but also to prevent potential violations of federal and state laws. Based on our state law(Michigan) , prohibits the taping of private conversations of other individuals without the consent of all parties.

In connection with this, the administrative's office initiate a HIPAA monthly contest at work and open to all employees that wants to join on the contest. They post a question every month on the employee bulletin and everybody is welcome to join if they know the answer, and if will win they will receive an incentive. For last months' HIPAA question , "You are walking by a trash can and notice a pile of papers with and have been laid on top of the trash. What should you do?" I forgot the choices cause I was not paying attention that time but the answer was "Take it to your supervisor". Its very simple ,its self-explanatory but the choices are close to each other so have to pick the best one.
And for this month's HIPPA question is Where is the best place to discuss resident care?I think this time I will try to join . I forgot the choices again, all I know is that it was posted in the bulletin so everybody can see.lol. I think this is fun and we will learn something not just keep working but you are not aware of what you are doing.

Anyway, that's all for tonight, just want to share and write an entry a little bit different from the rest cause supposedly this blog is about "Living in a long term care facility" but I changed the headers cause sometimes I don't have time to write and relate what is the life in a nursing home.

Lifelock Review

Because of the good customer service that lifelock provided to their clients. Idtheftquiz.org launch a lifelock reviews corner with three other competitors . If you look at the site lifelock review is excellent compared to others. Like for example, they have the so called wallet lock but their competitors don't have so meaning, they don't really protect your identity 100%. One provides only a limited warranty but on lifelock review they have a $1,000,000 service guarantee. So idtheftquiz recommended Life-lock because they offer the most comprehensive identity theft protection available today.
